ABOUT TEETH WHITENING
The process of a teeth whitening procedure
Two primary types of whitening products include bleaching agents containing peroxide and whitening toothpastes. Among peroxide-containing bleaching agents, most whitening systems utilize either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient.
The effectiveness, potency, and safety of the whitening system are contingent on the concentration of these ingredients. The teeth whitening process entails a chemical reaction between the bleaching agent and the molecules responsible for discoloration. This reaction effectively breaks down and eliminates stains and discoloration from the teeth.
Factors to consider when providing care
Post-teeth whitening care
Here are some guidelines to optimize the benefits of a teeth whitening procedure:
- In the 48 hours following an in-office teeth whitening treatment, exercise caution with your diet. It takes a couple of days for the protective layer of your teeth to fully recover, so avoid deeply colored foods and drinks that can cause stains. This includes coffee, red wine, dark soft drinks, teas, berries, grapes, chocolate, and other dark-colored foods.
- Avoid smoking, as it can lead to teeth staining and yellowing. It's advisable to refrain from smoking for at least the first few days following a teeth whitening procedure. Reducing or quitting smoking not only enhances the appearance of your smile but also promotes better oral health and overall well-being.
- It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for a couple of days after the procedure. This discomfort typically diminishes over time, but you can manage it by using over-the-counter pain medication and sensitive teeth toothpaste.
- Understand that the outcomes of teeth whitening procedures vary among individuals. Factors such as your initial tooth shade, diet, and oral habits can impact both immediate and long-term results. Additionally, teeth whitening does not affect the color of existing fillings, crowns, bridges, or dental bonding. If this is a concern, we can explore options for replacing a restoration.
- Maintain your treatment results by upholding good oral hygiene and attending regular dental check-ups. If necessary, we provide a take-home whitening system for occasional touch-ups.
